Abstract
BACKGROUND: Schools are important settings for children's physical activity (PA), yet differences in PA opportunities between public and private schools in underserved rural communities remain unclear. This cross-sectional study objectively compared PA between public and private elementary schools in rural, low socioeconomic regions, defining PA quantity as minutes allocated to PA opportunities and PA quality as the proportion of opportunity time spent in moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and vigorous PA (VPA). METHODS: Students in grades 2–5 (N=206) from three public and two private schools wore tri-axial accelerometers during school hours for one week. Teachers completed daily logs documenting PA opportunity type, duration, structure, and supervision. Group differences were examined using multivariate analysis of variance. RESULTS: Only 10 students (4.8%) met the recommended 30 minutes of school-day MVPA (13.62±7.87 min/day). Public school students accumulated more daily steps than private school students (6,222±2,583 vs. 4,908±1,228; p<0.001) but less MVPA during recess (7.34±5.61 vs. 13.31±7.57 min; p<0.001). Private schools provided more weekly physical education (146.23±98.45 vs. 92.24±26.08 min; p<0.001) and twice the weekly vigorous PA during PE (16.21±12.16 vs. 8.14±8.26 min; p<0.001). Third-grade students recorded the highest proportion of recess time in MVPA but the lowest daily step counts. Three of five schools employed certified PE instructors. CONCLUSIONS: Most students failed to meet MVPA recommendations. Despite more recess opportunities in public schools, private school students achieved greater PA intensity, indicating opportunity duration alone is insufficient. Future research should identify factors, including certified PE instruction, resources, and program structure, that enhance school-based PA intensity.
